About Us

If you are reading this, you are probably living in Chengdu or about to move here.  If you are not familiar with the city, we have good news for you:  Chengdu is a fun, vibrant place to live with an active international community.  Sichuan people say that Beijing is all about power and Shanghai is all about money, but Chengdu is all about leisure!

Currently, Chengdu International Women’s Club has over 200 members and counting.  We are a diverse group of women from all over the globe, including the US, China, France, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, UK, Malaysia, Singapore, Canada, Philippines, Japan and more.  We have an enthusiastic committee who run our regular activities and work on developing new ones.

If you are new in town, you may be feeling a little overwhelmed, so come along and meet others in the same boat, as well as people who have been around for a few years and can answer your questions.  If you are an old China hand, come and meet some new faces.

CIWC is a great way to make friends from around the world and exchange news and views about life in Chengdu!

AN OVERVIEW OF OUR EVENTS

CIWC Regular Events

Coffee Morning and Market Trip

We gather for coffee or a market trip the 1st Tuesday of each month, from 10am to 11.30am. Coffee mornings will take place at a different restaurant or coffee shop.  Every other month we will venture on a market trip to different places around Chengdu, e.g. the flower market, antique street, ladies’ street, …

Luncheon
Every 3rd Wednesday of the month, we hold a luncheon at a member’s house and bring a dish to share. From 12pm until 1.30-2pm, you have the opportunity to meet other members and sample food from other countries.

Cooking Demo
During the last week of every month in general, one of our members hosts a cooking demo, and introduces us to some yummy dishes she herself learned how to prepare in her home country or anywhere else in the world.

Ladies’ or  Couples’ & Friends’ Night Out
We also organize either a ladies’ night out or a “bring a friend or partner” night out, when we enjoy some of Sichuan’s famous cuisine or sample the growing range of international restaurants around town.

CIWC Special Events

Cultural Events

Recent events have included a tea tasting evening and a flower-arranging class.

Annual Christmas Bazaar
In December, we organize an International Community Christmas Bazaar.  In the tradition of holiday bazaars around the world, this is a fun family day of games for the family, entertainment, handicraft and bake sales, and of course a visit from Santa himself.  All proceeds go to a charity, chosen by the Bazaar’s Committee.

CIWC Groups

Book Group

Chengdu’s International Women’s Book Group was started several years ago with a few avid readers and the group has grown to over 20 members.  The group selects books in April or May to read for the following year.  There is no specific criterion for book selection, other than what you think is a “good read”.  Books may then be purchased over the summer or ordered in plenty of time for the following year.

The Book Group meets the 2nd Thursday of each month at a member’s house.  The group supports the hostess by bringing a snack, bottle of wine, soda, or something else to share.  Each month a group member leads the discussion with some information on the author, a review or two, and a few specific points or questions to get us started.

Playgroup
CIWC playgroup is open to all pre-schoolers and their parents or carers, and older siblings are welcome too. It's a great way for the kids to make friends, and for the adults to meet other parents with young children and share information about family life in Chengdu. We meet every Wednesday morning except during school holidays, and from time to time we organize other outings or events. Please contact chengduiwc@gmail.com if you are interested in joining the playgroup mailing list.
Currently we meet most weeks at Etonhouse International Preschool. The school sends their bus to pick us up from the Kempinski Hotel at 9:40am and we return to town by noon. Etonhouse have given us the use of a pre-school classroom well-stocked with toys, books, paints etc. and access to a wonderful outdoor play space.
However, on the third Wednesday of every month we generally meet at a member's home in town instead, from 9:30 to 11:30, so that people who wish to attend the CIWC luncheon have time to get there. Details are circulated to the playgroup mailing list.

Tennis Club

Tennis Club is open to all CIWC-members and their friends or spouses. The club meets several times a week at tennis courts around the Chengdu south area.
