Sichuan Quake Relief

SICHUAN QUAKE RELIEF, from Chengdu Bookworm (www.sichuan-quake-relief.org)

30 June 2008

Hey everybody,
we are looking for volunteers to go into the affected area (probably
around Mianzhu) to teach in one of our summer camps.
Our first summer camp will hopefully start around July 7th and we are
looking for volunteers who could at least stay a week, the longer the
better.
We already are in touch with a few schools who are looking for volunteers
right now, so if anybody is interested in starting sooner then July 7th
please let me know.
The volunteers would be getting a basic trauma therapy training and have a
prep meeting before going into the area.
The main goal is to give the kids a good time after all they’ve been through.
Possible classes would be arts/crafts; music/dance; sports; English.
Chinese is not a must, since we’re looking for Chinese English speakers to
volunteer as well, but definitely comes in handy .
The volunteers would be staying in tents close to the tent school, since
all the places are at least a two hour drive from Chengdu. We will provide
transportation, teaching materials and probably group tents.
It’s still a work in progress but if you have any suggestions or questions
or want to sign up as a teacher feel free to send me an email
(lucy@sichuan-quake-relief.org) or call 139 800 24 997.

Cheers,
Lucy

MORNING TEARS (www.morningtears.org)
The estimated number of victims keeps on growing. On May 23 the official number of deaths is 55 723 and 24380 people missing. There have been 175 aftershocks above magnitude four in the quake zone. Prices for all products are rising quickly and we enter a red alert faze for the outbreak of epidemics.
Media reports say that more than 4 000 children have become orphans in the quake.  The response to this news was massive. There was an overwhelming amount of domestic applications to adopt earthquake orphans. There are even Chinese companies that offer to adopt 'all earthquake orphans'. There were also an amazing amount of requests for adoption from people outside China. Moreover, many aid corporations and agencies are already constructing or planning to construct orphanages.
However, this might be the moment that things might start going wrong with the relief actions. The facts are that:

  • Many children still have parents. It is very usual that rural workers leave children behind with other families  to go and work in far away cities. These parents are now likely searching desperately for their children.
  • Children who are not picked up by a parent should not be put in orphanages. Children have much more chances to receive individualized support and develop to their full potential if they can grow up with second degree family (best scenario) or in foster care placements programs (second best). Only the 'residue children' should live in institutional care.

Among children of convicts there is a very high percentage of 'residue children'. Children of criminals are often considered as criminals. For those children Morning Tear will build a center 55 km away from Chengdu (the capital of the earthquake province). In a first phase this center will serve as a temporary home for the kids while a suitable placement program for them is worked out. Because they are children of convicts this will be much more difficult and can take up to six months. After this, the center will change into the permanent home for children for whom no solutions has been found.
All agreements are in place with the Chinese authorities. Morning Tears is searching for funding for this action. Donations for Morning Tears can be done by credit card of bank transfers. Donations in China and Belgium are tax deductible

She now is certified professional coach (International Coach Academy) and a Neuro Linguistic Practitioner and coaches people all over the world.

Grief Literature - Booklet
Lynda Dyer has written a book called "Good Grief" which has been greatly received around the world. "Good Greif" has been translated into the Chinese language and is ready for printing.  We believe this booklet is an exceptional piece of literature which will assist the people of Si Chuan to move through their grief. The book is very simply written and can be used with Children. We would like to print and ship to the Si Chuan region a minimum of 2,000 booklets.

About Good Grief
Sadness of grief takes a whole new meaning when we reflect back on the life of a person or animal we love. Good Grief was written with the purpose to allow others to grieve and celebrate the life of those people and animals we lose along our path through life.

Lynda Dyer had six deaths in one year and another the following year. She decided the best way to deal with her grief was to look at the great contribution these people had on her life rather than looking at the gap that they left.  Focusing on the loss for an extended period almost certainly leads to a state of depression. Good Grief is an understanding of loss and a celebration of life.  It teaches people of all ages how to embrace the grief and pain and move through it successfully and carry on with life.

HPC believes Good Grief, now translated into the Chinese language, will give thousands of suffering Chinese people the opportunity to understand and move through their pain and grief.

There is an opportunity to have a credit page inside the booklet for the sponsors of the project.

Please feel free to register your interest with us.

Hong Pan, 86-13122377736 -
